Exploratour - The Surface of the Earth
The Ocean Floor
Looking at this view of the Earth, you can see deep folds along the ocean floor. The deepest places on Earth are along these deep folds. The very deepest spot on Earth is deeper than the highest peak. The lowest spot on the ocean floor, the Challenger Deep, is at a depth of about 35,000 ft. The highest spot, Mt. Everest, is 29,000 ft high.
On the ocean floor there are:
- deep trenches at the edges of some plates
- raised areas in the middle
- transform faults
- large volcanoes which form isolated islands
